Recipients of the 2012 Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards Announced

The sixth annual Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards will recognize three unique restoration projects and their contributions to historic preservation in Newport, Rhode Island. The awards celebration will be held at Rough Point, the Newport home of preservationist and philanthropist Doris Duke, on Friday, September 7. The Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards is a joint project of the Newport Restoration Foundation and the City of Newport to celebrate achievements in local historic preservation. This years honorees are:

Robert & Valerie Carbone for their work on 392 Spring Street, which stayed true to preservation principles, even though historic district zoning did not apply in their neighborhood, while rescuing a c.1875 Newport cottage
Linda Sawyer & John D. Harris II for the thoughtful restoration of 665 Bellevue Avenue, a beautiful 1870 example of Richard Morris Hunts stick style in Newport
The Preservation Society of Newport County for the Bellevue Avenue History Trail sign project, which provides an important public education service by telling the story of the famed streets rich architectural and social history

The award winners were chosen by a committee comprised of representatives from NRF, the City of Newport, and individuals involved in historic preservation at the local and state levels. Winners will also be publicly acknowledged in late August at Newport City Hall.

The care and dedication taken by our honorees to respect and preserve Newports architectural history is precisely why the Newport Restoration Foundation established the Preservation Awards, said Pieter N. Roos, executive director of the Newport Restoration Foundation. Each year we have the privilege of recognizing projects that help maintain Newports historic landscape for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.

All proceeds from the awards celebration benefit the Doris Duke Fund for Historic Preservation, which distributes grants to civic and non-profit organizations on Aquidneck Island and Jamestown. Administered by the NRF, these grants are generally given for bricks-and-mortar projects or project planning. The funds from the 2011 awards celebration benefited projects including the restoration of Kingscotes chimneys, the stone bastion at Rose Island Lighthouse, interior woodwork at Newport Art Museum and leaded glass windows at St. Marys, as well as planning for repair of St. Pauls steeple and conservation of historic frescos in the Seamens chapel.
